Online Book Club?

Sunrise – 8:25 a.m.

Sunset – 5:40 p.m.

Of course it’s light long before and after those times; that’s when the brilliant orb peeks above the mountains to the south and disappears around the hill to the west.

So did Everyone read today for Read Across America? I haven’t, but will head off to do so as soon as I’m through here. I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas about online book clubs. Do they exist? If so, how do they work? What might be the goals of an online book club?

I think it would be fun to start an online book club as part of the Needle & Th*READ* program. I have the means–though as yet not the know-how– to create a chat room on my web site. Well, I think I have the means. I’m pretty sure I do. What about holding book chats at prearranged times? Would anyone be interested?

I’d like to read a bit more widely than I currently do. Right now, I pretty much read kids’ books exclusively. When Mike and I read together (not nearly often enough these days) we tend to read classics or history. I think it would be fun to read some other stuff, and to then think and talk about it. I’ve never belonged to a book club, but it seems like a worthwhile and fun thing to try.

So I guess this is your warning. In my free time–this summer, perhaps?–I’m going to explore that chat room feature. In the meantime, how about a list of recommended books, and maybe some ideas about what a book club should do?

  1. Initial reaction, sounds great. It might be good to agree on a general topic, genre etc and generate a potential list from that.
