Weekend Site-Seeing
Have you been to The Stitchers’ Village yet? I look forward to hanging out there. Our next bracelet class will be held in the Village, as well as others. There is a theater where video classes and tutorials will be available. What do you know…we just learned how to make videos!
Watchers
When we spy the coyotes, they turn tail and run. The eagles, ravens, gulls, and ducks fly away. The black bears, when they’re up and about, ignore us or amble away. The sea otters disappear underwater. The seals, on the other hand, actually gather and watch us. There may be nary a seal when we [...]
Icebergs: Do You Know?
Many icebergs are dimpled, like a golf ball but not as regular. I wonder why this is. What is the physical nature of an iceberg or what about the melting process results in these dimples? Do any of you know? Something else I found interesting was that when I touched the giants in the upper [...]
The Frozen Upper Lagoon
Conditions are perfect for walking. The three-days-worth of very wet snow is now frozen, forming a hard crust over the 4.5 feet of accumulated and packed snow. The low brush and irregular surfaces that make walking difficult in summer are buried, and we can tramp easily across the top of the snow without post-holing or [...]
A Mystery
Mike walked out of the generator shed and glimpsed a bald eagle as it rose from the ground near staff quarters. That’s a notable sight; the forest floor is not exactly a popular eagle hangout. He came to get his camera and me, and we checked it out. Our arrival sent two eagles flying from [...]
Stitching for Literacy Update
The Monday “What have you done lately?” accountability post, where I announce my Needle and Thread: Stitching for Literacy program promotion goal for the week and fess up on last week’s goal. The Challenge is almost here! My goal last week was to finish the baseball bookmark designs. They’re still not done, though one is [...]
What I’m Reading
What’s on my nightstand? The Possibilities of Sainthood, by Donna Freitas. I’m on chapter six, so I don’t have much to say about the book itself. The title is linked to a review, if you’d like to read one. Truth is, I’m not reading as much here as I do at home. I thought it [...]
Weekend Sightseeing
After several days of very dark clouds dumping very wet snow, the sun broke out, and so did we. We went canoeing after lunch. The lagoon is often iced in, but not today. The lagoon residents all came out to see us, circling around us but never coming close. The bravest came as close as [...]
Our Next Job
All right, friends, we need your help. We’ve applied for another caretaking job–in Australia, what Queensland Tourism has dubbed “The Best Job in the World.” You may have heard about it on TV or Yahoo. It’s a pie-in-the-sky job, to be sure, but mm-mm, don’t you just love a big yummy slice of pie-in-the-sky now [...]
Caught in the Act!
I mentioned some time ago that I wanted to witness a seal climbing out of the water onto the ice. I wondered if they bob/hop/fly out or if they crawl out. Seals don’t have the useful front flippers that sea lions do; they can’t “walk” on their flippers. You know what’s coming next…mystery solved! I [...]
