One of our caretaking traditions is the pursuit something academic. In the past, we’ve read an astronomy textbook and many history books. Our current subject is Great Ideas in Classical Physics and Einstein’s Relativity and the Quantum Revolution. It’s taught by Steven Pollock, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Physics, University of Colorado, Boulder. This is a DVD course offered by The Teaching Company.

My physics background is pretty weak, but so far I find the material in the 30-minute lectures accessible. We’ll see what happens when we get to relativity.

I love The Teaching Company. They offer courses in various formats (audio, dvd, hardcopy, downloadable) taught by top college professors all over the country. Subjects range from art, music, and literature, to history, science, and math, to religion, business, and social sciences. I just noticed they offer high school courses as well.

We’ve purchased courses for gifts, and I have a long list of ones I’d like to have myself. Think of all the things we might listen to while we stitch!

The Teaching Company also offers information about cultural events in different places around the country. I get info about events in Philadelphia so I can make recommendations to my father and even purchase tickets on occasion.

Check them out.
