I want to translate zoo themes to needlework. Got any ideas how to do this? I don’t have a lot of space to work with, so no 3,000-stitch pictures. Here are some of my thoughts:

Snakes–long and skinny works
animal tracks
eyes
animal skin patterns
scales
elephant trunk
tails–with patterns
foliage–food and habitat

feather and fly stitches–they don’t look like birds, but you see the connection, right?
whopper-jawed eyelets look like bird stuff–gross, I know, but it’s one of my favorite stitches, and I like the excuse to use it with a zoo theme
crow’s foot–it’s the name of a tailoring stitch. It’s a diamond, I think. I’ll have to look it up; I’m lousy with stitch names. I tend to make them up. Can you think of other stitches with animal-y names? Leviathan.

I can’t tell you why I’m doing this yet, but it will be revealed in a couple of months.

Maybe something with the bars of a cage. Not sure what.

Okay. Your turn. Don’t suggest anything you don’t want me to use. Can you think of a creative way to interpret a zoo theme in needlework?

Just start listing things without thinking or judging them. You might be surprised what pops up.
