Spring
Still waiting for six numbers to add to the 2009 Bookmark Challenge total. Many participants are still taking donations and will collect bookmarks year-round, but I hope to have a number soon. The rest can be counted in next year’s total.
Around here, it’s spring!
Actually, the entire month of May has been gorgeous. Last weekend, I went orchid hunting. My goal was to locate at least a dozen.
In the past, I’ve only seen these fairy slippers in small numbers: singles, pairs, trios scattered through the aspen forest. I’d never seen them until we moved here.
Maybe it’s a little early in the year, but it took me a while to locate a dozen.
Then, on the way home, I happened upon this:
There are a dozen in this shot alone! It was a four-square-foot garden of fairy slippers, probably more than fifty of them all together.
Now I know!

I am excited by the content of your blog today…you were out discovering orchids while I was in discovering a Japanese novel. Orchids are prolific in Japan (at least I think so); I think it’s serendipitous that your orchid hunt coincides with my uncovering of a treasure. While I was reading it, I kept thinking I wanted to mention it in your comment section of this blog. But I was afraid that if I waited until this weekend to write about it when you ask us What Are You Reading?, then it would be on the back burner of my brain, and I’d plain old forget to do it. But your orchid hunt coincides wonderfully with my find…so here goes.
While in the library a few days ago, I pulled the novel The Housekeeper and the Professor, by Yoko Ogawa, off of the new fiction shelf. While it was written in 2003, it was only just translated and released in the American market earlier this year. It’s the story of a young mother who goes to work for a mathematics professor, who has suffered a traumatic brain injury. The ensuing story is a thing of beauty. It’s an unusual story and touching in so many ways. (It is NOT a romance novel.)
Please, please read it.

For starters, I love the orchid-Japan connection. Finding connections (as you know) is a sort of game for me.
That said, you don’t need one to post a comment: random comments are welcome! I post random photos, so you should feel free to post random comments.
In fact, I’ll make it a game and attempt to draw a connection myself if you can’t–though by all means, give it go if you’re of a mind.
The Housekeeper and the Professor is on my reading list. The trick is going to be finding it, of course, but I’ll see what I can do.
I love book recommendations, especially personal ones.
