Reading Roundup
What’s on my nightstand? The Lucky Ones, by Stephanie Greene. I enjoyed this book, but I wish I’d been allowed to critique it before it was published; I have questions I wish it had answered. Just now, I read the blurb for the book on the HarperCollins website, and while it seems to go with [...]
Weekend Sightseeing
This is the trail I walk along the highway when I go to get the mail. I know there’s a lot of green in the picture, but note the thick patch on the ground in the center of the image. It is a unique clump of green. Let’s get closer. It’s fireweed. Nothing unique about [...]
Reading Rant
Yowser. I’m listening to an audio book I don’t like and I’m reading a book I find annoying. Naturally, I will not name titles, but I’m going to rant a bit. The book is a debut novel. I’m not finished, so some opinions could change, but here is one that will not: it needs editing! [...]
Bookmark Challenge Results
I feel as though there should be a closing ceremony of some sort for the Needle and Thread: Stitching for Literacy 2009 Bookmark Challenge. Any ideas how to have a closing ceremony here on the blog? One problem–though I hate to call it a problem–is that bookmarks continue to trickle in through the month and [...]
Alaska Today
Spring and summer came early to this part of Alaska. May has been sunny sunny sunny except for the day it rained slush and snowed. I got an early start on gardening. A couple new old windows enlarge this year’s cold frame on the deck, home to tomatoes, cukes, zucs, and herbs. Peas are already [...]
Stitching for Literacy Update
The Monday “What have you done lately?” accountability post, where I announce my Needle and Thread: Stitching for Literacy program promotion goal for the week and fess up on last week’s goal. I’m going to take Mulligan on last week’s goal, okay? I hate to start the 2010 Challenge year with a failure, and I [...]

What’s on my nightstand? The Rule of Won, by Stefan Petrucha. Terrific book. The Rule of Won takes a look at group thinking; specifically, what happens when a group of people embraces a notion that the universe provides whatever one wants: ask and ye shall receive. Want a book contract? Ask the universe for it, [...]
2009 Challenge Update
Bookmark counts and information continue to roll in. Fancy Works in Indiana collected 4.5 times as many bookmarks in 2009 as they did in 2008. Congratulations! Liz reports, “One came all the way from Cheltenham, England. The White River Embroiders Guild sent us 9. Two customers each donated over 20.” Many bookmarks were cross stitched [...]
Spring
Still waiting for six numbers to add to the 2009 Bookmark Challenge total. Many participants are still taking donations and will collect bookmarks year-round, but I hope to have a number soon. The rest can be counted in next year’s total. Around here, it’s spring! Actually, the entire month of May has been gorgeous. Last [...]
Stitching for Literacy Update
The Monday “What have you done lately?” accountability post, where I announce my Needle and Thread: Stitching for Literacy program promotion goal for the week and fess up on last week’s goal. I know. We haven’t wrapped up the 2009 Challenge yet (still waiting for bookmark numbers from several participants), but it’s time to start [...]
