Weekend Site-Seeing
Years ago, Mike and I bought fractal software thinking we might make needlework patterns from the designs. We learned about fractals through my math-teacher father. Of course, since fractals are computer-generated, anyone can make the designs (much faster than I can brush my teeth), and before we could say “Mandelbrot Set,” many iterations of cross [...]
Still NaNoing
Becca and I are both still NaNoing, or, more accurately, still working on our NaNo novels. I am not writing 2,000 words a day. We both met the 50,000-word goal on November 30th, and we both had a more-or-less complete story arc. But then we set a new goal of a complete draft, with plot [...]
Readergirlz Live Chat
Just back from my first Live Chat (with Meg Cabot) on the Readergirlz MySpace Forum. My biggest concern was that I would forget or lose track of time and miss it. I wrote the event on my calendar, wrote a note to myself yesterday and posted it on my computer, and I set an alarm [...]
Decorating Cookies
The year is 1991. Mike and I are caretaking for the first time at Bristol Bay Lodge. ‘Tis the season; the Dillingham public radio station plays holiday music, but we can’t get to the post office twenty miles away in Aleknagik because while the bay is frozen preventing us from taking the boat out, the [...]
Stitching for Literacy Update
The Monday “What have you done lately?” accountability post, where I announce my Needle and Thread: Stitching for Literacy program promotion goal for the week and fess up on last week’s goal. Last week, my goal was to create a flyer that anyone can print and share with a local library, school, or needlework shop [...]
Weekend Site-Seeing
This weekend we’re going over to MommaStitch. Lynette is a Needlework Nutshell (subscription box in sidebar) reader and a skilled and prolific stitcher. Something that bothers me about framing needlework and hanging it on my wall is that very few people get to see it that way. Many stitchers share images of their needlework online, [...]
Let It Snow! and How To Be Popular
What’s on my nightstand?Well, you already know this from two days ago, but Let It Snow! by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle. These are holiday romances. I would never have considered myself a romance reader, but I seem to have become one in the past year–YAs, of course. I’m in the middle of [...]
I Won Books!
I love blog contests. Kidlit bloggers are generous with books. Not too long ago, literary agent, Kate Schafer (kt literary), held a contest on her blog, which is technically her news page, but it is updated like a blog and has an RSS feed, so I think of it as a blog. She was going [...]
Holiday Mosaic-Part 3
I transferred the pattern onto the backing.
Holiday Mosaic-Part 2
Mike cut the 4′x4′ octagon backing from 3/4″ plywood then measured and drew graph lines. I soaked the tiles off their paper backing, dried and separated them.
